How to Best Protect Your Pets in Winter

You can never be too prepared for the cold and snow, and that includes preparing our pets! Here are some top tips and great products that will help you keep your pet safe, warm, and happy all winter long!

Keep Paws Protected
One of the most important things you can do is keep your dog’s paws protected any time you are going outside. Not only can cold asphalt and cement make your dog’s paws cold and uncomfortable, but the abundance of ice melt can be very harmful and toxic to the healthy skin on their pads, causing them to become dry, crack, and even bleed.
Protect your dog’s paws by giving them booties, like these disposable rubber boots from Pawz. And if your dog just isn’t into booties, be sure to thoroughly wipe down your dog’s paws with a cloth and warm water every time you come back inside to avoid any long term contact with ice melt. For additional protection or to help reverse paw damage, consider using Pet Head’s paw butter, which will help keep your dog’s paws smooth and crack-free all winter long.
And if you use ice melt at your own home, consider using Safe Paw, a non-toxic and safe for paws ice melt.

Keep Skin Hydrated
If you’ve noticed that your dog or cat has been scratching excessively or has dandruff and a dry coat during the winter, they likely have dry skin. Petwell Supply carries several products designed especially for your pet’s dry skin. Our top recommended products are Grizzly’s fish oils and Wondercide’s Skin Tonic, which will help keep your pet’s skin and coat itch-free and hydrated all winter long.

Stay on Top of Joint Health
Senior pets and pets with arthritis and joint problems are particularly susceptible to winter's chill as cold weather can take a huge toll on joint health. While Petwell Supply carries many great products for joint support, our top recommended product is CBD*. Kurapet’s CBD comes in a convenient gel, which can be applied right to your pet’s achy muscles and joints, offering fast and long-lasting relief that you can use as-needed or regularly.

Short to medium length-haired dogs will most likely want to wear a jacket to keep warm. Still need the perfect jacket for your dog? Stop by Petwell Supply to check out our community box! Our awesome Somerville neighbors have dropped off many jackets and sweaters that are looking for new homes. And while you’re here, feel free to drop off any old jackets, leashes, collars, supplies, and toys of your own that are still in good condition for another neighbor to bring to a new home.
