Which Fish Oil Is Right for My Pet's Needs?

If you have been considering using fish oil for your pet, you may have had difficulty in deciding which one is right for their needs, since different types of fish oils carry unique benefits. So where should you begin?

Firstly, it is important to understand why fish oil is such a great supplement for pets. Fish oil provides Omega-3 fatty acids to your pet’s diet. Your pet should have a good balance between Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids, but many traditional pet foods have very high levels of Omega-6, and not enough Omega-3. Too much Omega-6 can reverse the benefits of a healthy amount of Omega-3.

So what are the benefits of fish oil? Let’s look at the three most common types of fish oils: pollock, salmon, and krill.

Pollock Oil:
Pollock oil contains a very high content of the Omega-3 fatty acid known as EPA, which supports the healthy function of your pet’s skin and coat.

Salmon Oil:
In addition to EPA, salmon oil contains another Omega-3 fatty acid known as DHA, supports your pet’s nerve-based functions, such as cognition, vision, fertility, and immune system. It also contains both Vitamin A, Vitamin D, and Vitamin E.

Krill Oil:
While krill oil contains a smaller amount of Omega-3 than pollock and salmon oil, it contains a high number of antioxidants, which help your pet kill what are known as “free radicals,” molecules that disrupt the digestive system. In addition, krill oil supports liver health and ocular, respiratory, cardiovascular, and vascular functions.

Just a couple of pumps of fish oil onto your dog’s or cat’s food every day makes supplementing their diet a very easy and effective solution to a lot of common ailments. Check out these different types of fish oils that Petwell Supply carries both in store and online!
